Stephen P. Bucalo, Partner

Steve Bucalo regularly works with senior executives of some of the most prestigious energy companies formulating business strategies and implementing change which creates distinct competitive advantages.  He has served the global utility industry for 30 years, providing management advisory services on a broad base of strategic, organization, processes, and technology issues.  He has directed over 100 successful engagements, creating significant shareholder value to his clients.  Prior to joining ScottMadden, Mr. Bucalo held the position of Partner/Vice President for the following firms, leading their U.S. utilities consulting practices:  Ernst & Young/Capgemini, AT Kearney, and Coopers & Lybrand.  He received a B.S. in economics from Manhattan College and an M.B.A. from Long Island University.

Recent Assignments

 
  • Directed supply chain excellence programs for major North American utilities including enterprise-wide strategic sourcing, process reengineering, and change management. Strategic sourcing programs under his responsibility have covered all major sourcing groups procured by utilities and, in aggregate, have totaled over $4B of annual spend
  • Led the formation of a B2B eProcurement Exchange serving the electric and gas utilities industry. Provided expertise in all supply chain activities, including supplier management, strategic sourcing, and technology
  • Assisted in the formation of a new energy company (from its predecessor state-owned company), Contact Energy in New Zealand, to compete in an open, wholesale generation market through the design and implementation of a new process-driven organization with a comprehensive change management program
  • Assisted several of the largest U.S. utilities establish growth strategies, including new market expansion (both U.S. and overseas), new products/services, mergers/acquisitions, and alliances
  • Directed a comprehensive restructuring program, reporting directly to the CEO, for a southwestern investor-owned utility, including reengineering of key processes across all business units, organization restructuring, asset rationalization, and financial forecasting. Significant emphasis on nuclear generation investments
  • Assisted a major investor-owned utility align its technology strategy with its corporate and business unit strategies to create a more focused and productive internal investment plan
  • Directed outsourcing programs for several major government-owned facilities
  • Provided expert opinion and analysis before several public utility commissions regarding commercial competitiveness of internal service cost versus market-based service cost for a multi-state telecommunications company
  • Assisted major utilities evaluate the implications to shareholder value of proposed and alternative merger and acquisition strategies
