James H. Murray, Jr., Partner
Jim Murray has worked with more than sixty energy companies and regulatory agencies during his 30-year career, affording him a deep understanding of the complexities of today's changing operating environments. His expertise in business planning, asset management and technology, and his extensive experience in operations management enable him to quickly establish credibility with senior management and project teams alike.
Mr. Murray rejoined ScottMadden in 2008 as a partner in the firm's energy practice, having been a principal with the company from 1985-1996. Prior to rejoining the firm, he led the utilities consulting practice for IBM, and the energy and utilities consulting practice for SAIC. He earned bachelors and masters degrees in industrial engineering from Oklahoma State University, and is a registered Professional Engineer in Oklahoma and Texas.
Recent Assignments
- Developed a strategic plan for a supplier of substation automation products. The project included determining overall market potential and customer buying criteria, and resulted in a business plan designed to capture additional share
- Managed a technical support team to evaluate the functionality of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). The scope of responsibilities included evaluation of network security, approach for integration with legacy applications, and inputs for business case development
- Supported the implementation of an integrated work management/asset management system for a fleet of nuclear power plants. Specific role included project oversight and membership on the executive committee, as well as technical support in organizational change management and work management process improvement
- Provided organizational change management support for a corporate-wide cost reporting and analysis system implementation. The project scope included stakeholder analysis, training development, sponsor management and communications planning
- Led a project to evaluate and select a new asset management system for the distribution department of a large utility. The project included documenting requirements, evaluating software packages, and preparing business cases to support recommendations
- Assisted several retail energy providers with the selection and implementation of customer management and billing systems
- Managed several engagements focused on total functional redesign for gas and electric utilities, including: accounting, field operations, power generation, information technology, human resources, support services, and materials management
- Led a series of process reengineering projects that have included information technology management, supply chain management, new services installation, customer billing and care, construction, meter reading, contractor management, marketing, and management accounting.
- Managed multiple projects to develop company-wide work forecasting and planning processes. The objectives of the projects included integrating corporate strategic direction with the work scheduling system, interfacing the system with key performance indicators, and integrating the systems with the overall supply chain
- Served as project manager to implement a business planning process for several electric and gas utilities. The projects included developing the approach, training, and facilitating planning sessions for multiple business units, which resulted in corporate-wide planning processes
