Stephen C. Sanders, Partner
Steve Sanders has extensive management consulting and financial planning experience in the global business environment. His areas of industry expertise include energy utilities, energy trading and marketing, and industrial gases. Prior to joining ScottMadden, he held a variety of management positions, most recently with the WorldCrest Group, an e-procurement services company. Mr. Sanders holds an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania; a B.S. in business administration from the University of Missouri, summa cum laude; and a B.A. in psychology from the University of Missouri, Phi Beta Kappa.
Recent Assignments
- Led the development of a comprehensive strategy for the construction services function of a large electric utility in preparation for a multi-billion dollar environmental construction program. Key strategies developed included craft labor productivity and availability, contracting, and modularization and pre-fabrication approaches. The new strategy identified savings of more than nine million man-hours
- Assisted a large electric utility with reorganizing its technical services function. First, identified key master services through customer and provider focus groups. The services' planning and delivery processes were then used to generate organization options based on customers and services instead of disciplines
- Facilitated the development of a corporate-wide power plant maintenance project prioritization process for a major competitive generation company. Worked with the client team to develop a collaborative process, project proposal templates, and project scoring methodology to prepare initial "rack and stack" project priorities
- Led the development of a major equipment (e.g., CT, STG, HRSG) procurement process for a competitive generation company. Conducted multi-industry research examining major equipment procurement practices. Facilitated a cross-functional client team that prepared current-state findings and future-state recommendations
- Facilitated the cross-country relocation of gas trading operations for a major utility client. Determined workflow dependencies, developed and implemented employee retention plans, and coordinated all aspects of relocating the trading operation with minimal disruption to day-to-day operations
- Led the reorganization process for the finance and accounting group of a major power trading organization. Led the project team and client through current- and future-state work and organization design, culminating in a re-staffing process for the senior roles in the new organization
- Led several teams in producing chapters for a power generation playbook. Results were used to coordinate all management aspects of operating a large fleet of generation assets. Facilitated teams in developing centralized outage scheduling, market-value driven plant performance measurement, and engineering services delivery for regulated and unregulated projects
- Led the development of a management information system for the unregulated subsidiary of a large electric utility. Used existing systems and coding structures to develop tools to report monthly product line performance down to the operating profit level
- Led a cross-functional study team to evaluate domestic and international power sector services opportunities. Performed market opportunity analysis, product development and financial modeling of the product lines and total venture
- Authored the corporate business plan of a large electric utility. Facilitated teams in the development and presentation of operating plans, performance goals, and financial returns. Integrated team results to produce the corporate business plan
