W.W. Smith, Partner

Bill Smith has spent 18 years as a management consultant with ScottMadden, following a 20-year career in the energy industry. His areas of expertise include energy supply and delivery, shared services design and implementation, and merger integration. Prior to joining ScottMadden, Mr. Smith held technical and managerial positions with Carolina Power & Light Company (now Progress Energy) and Exxon Corporation. His tenure at Progress Energy included assignments in the marketing, corporate planning, power supply, and power delivery areas. He received a B.S. in engineering from North Carolina State University.

  • Assisted a corporate facilities and site services organization to realign their strategy and service model to meet future needs. Developed a comprehensive gap analysis, facilitated the development of a future business model, and led the implementation effort
  • Managed the merger integration of legacy HR organizations for two large pharmaceutical companies. Developed a new model for delivering HR shared services, combined two HR service centers, and reorganized the shared services organization
  • Analyzed the sales and delivery channels for an energy services business and developed a guide for channel player acquisition
  • Facilitated post-merger integration of two companies, including organizing functional teams, setting specific targets for synergy realization, developing integration plans, and monitoring implementation
  • Created a strategic account management process and developed a team of new account managers
  • Facilitated the development and institutionalization of a marketing culture for a company whose industry was going through a transition. The project included utility marketing and sales process reengineering, new product development and launch, organization restructuring and skill development
  • Developed marketing and business plans for a startup services business
  • Conducted operations and revenue synergy analyses related to an acquisition
  • Assisted a startup metering services business with development of a business plan and with implementation as they entered the competitive energy market
  • Instituted a strategic planning process for the production business line of a utility and facilitated the development of the initial strategic plan
