Case Study: IT Shared Services Center Site Selection

ScottMadden performed a site selection study for a global logistics company interested in establishing a central IT shared services center and three satellite locations.

Challenge
  • The client's parent company was interested in establishing a global IT shared services center for its newly formed global enterprise
  • The client was charged with evaluating suitable locations for the IT shared services center, but did not have the information readily on hand to conduct the study
  • ScottMadden was retained to collect and analyze economic and quality-of-living data for viable countries and to provide a recommendation for one central IT shared services center and three satellite offices in separate global regions
Solution
  • Identified potential countries
  • Developed screening criteria based on client input regarding important/critical characteristics
  • Developed a recommendation matrix for further city research and grouped the cities into feasibility categories
  • Developed evaluation criteria that sharpened the focus of the screening criteria initially identified
  • Ranked cities based on the evaluation criteria and analyzed evaluation scores
  • Developed a recommendation for a central office location based on evaluation criteria rankings
  • Analyzed scores for the three regions outside of the central office recommendation region and developed recommendations for the three satellite office locations
Results
  • Recommended the location for a central IT shared services center and three satellite offices
  • Enabled the clients to provide a solid methodology to justify the recommended locations to the global team
  • Provided the client with background country rankings, economic, and quality-of-living data for future study, should the recommendations not be followed
