Challenge
ScottMadden partnered with the CEO and executive team of a generation and transmission cooperative to align with the board of directors on a 10-year strategy. Multiple factors, including policies, regulations, technologies, the economy, and customer expectations were changing the way the financial, operational, and organizational dimensions of the organization’s business functioned. Additionally, the organization had several investment decisions to make related to their generation and transmission assets, and their participation in two regional transmission organizations created additional challenges and opportunities.
Process
- Developed a shared understanding of the issues facing the organization and the current situation
- Considered potential future scenarios and their implications for the organization and their likelihoods and produced planning assumptions
- Aligned board and executive management on an integrated vision for the future over the next decade
- Produced an integrated strategy that outlined the actions and timing to position the organization for success while maintaining key corporate metrics
Result
- Produced detailed outside analysis of the current situation to develop a common, fact-based understanding
- Employed scenario planning, envisioning, and working sessions to gain agreement on the vision and plan
- Developed eight board-approved strategic focus areas with 17 related statements of strategic direction
- Supported management team development of 55 detailed plans to execute the strategy
- Determined the leads and resources needed to execute the plan for each of the identified areas
