Spring 2024 EIU Webcast: King for a Day

Article

ScottMadden held our Spring 2024 Energy Industry Update webcast on Wednesday, June 12, 2024. Below is the recording of the event, moderated by firm partner and Energy Practice Leader Cristin Lyons.
The energy utility industry faces several substantial challenges, all of which require major investment, time to remedy, and a favorable regulatory and business environment. Indeed, all these challenges might be easily resolved if one were “king for a day.” ScottMadden’s Energy Industry Update (EIU) report examines current trends in the utility and energy industry, where stakeholders are awaiting results of regulatory proceedings and the emergence of innovative technologies.  View the webinar to hear topics that include:

  • Clean Heat: Several jurisdictions with ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals are looking at opportunities for those reductions within the natural gas local distribution company sector. One focus area that some jurisdictions are examining, planning, and implementing is “clean heat,” which can be thought of as the intersection of decarbonization, electrification, and natural gas utility transformation. Presented by Victoria Nielsen, Manager, ScottMadden
  • Large Loads: Electricity peak demand and energy growth rates in North America are increasing at a pace not seen in decades, driven by new manufacturing facilities, data centers, and cryptocurrency mining. This rapid growth of large loads is prompting stakeholders to respond with various actions to increase generation capacity in larger quantities and on faster timelines than originally anticipated. Presented by Gerardo Morales, Partner, ScottMadden
  • Workforce Development: ScottMadden facilitated the Center for Energy Workforce Development’s biannual Energy Workforce study, which provides insights on specific challenges facing the energy sector. The most recent study collected data from 40 electric and natural gas utilities and energy companies. The results show an energy industry facing a new set of workforce challenges, with concerns of an aging workforce being replaced with a need to enhance the skills and support the training of a younger workforce. Emerging technology jobs also present a new realm of workforce planning and management. Presented by Justin Stevens, Partner, ScottMadden
